چکیده

Dilute oil dispersions of carbon black particles with attractive Van der Waals interactions display shear thickening in two distinct regimes. The first occurs at low shear rates, γ̇c1 ≈ 100s−1 along with the formation of vorticity aligned shear-induced structures. The second high shear regime with γ̇c2 ≈ 102−3s−1 is driven by hydrodynamic breakup of clusters. Pre-shearing in the high rate shear thickening regime produces enhanced-modulus gels where G′ ∼ σ1.5−2 pre−shear and is directly proportional to the residual stress in the gel measured at a fixed sample age. The observed data can be accounted for using a simple scaling model for the breakup of fractal clusters under shear stress.

New Insights on Fumed Colloidal Rheology - Shear Thickening and Vorticity Aligned Structures in Flocculating Dispersions

We investigate the rheology of dilute dispersions of fumed colloidal particles with attractive interactions in hydrocarbon liquids. Surprisingly, these systems display shear thickening due to the breakdown of densified flocs and a concomitant increase in the effective volume fraction of the fractal particles in the fluid. We show that this shear thickening is controlled by a critical stress and...

Shear thickening and scaling of the elastic modulus in a fractal colloidal system with attractive interactions.

Dilute oil dispersions of fractal carbon black particles with attractive van der Waals interactions display continuous shear thickening followed by shear thinning at high shear rates. The shear thickening transition occurs at gamma c approximately 10(2)-10(3) s(-1) and is driven by hydrodynamic breakup of clusters. Pre-shearing dispersions at shear rates gamma>gamma c produces enhanced-modulus ...

Shake-gels: shear-induced gelation of laponite /PEO mixtures

Suspensions of clay particles (laponite), mixed with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) undergo a dramatic shear thickening when subjected to vigorous shaking, which transforms them from a low viscosity fluid into a ‘shake-gel’, a solid with elasticity sufficient enough to support its own weight. The shake-gel is reversible, relaxing back to a fluid with a relaxation time that is strongly dependent on ...

Nonergodic states of charged colloidal suspensions: repulsive and attractive glasses and gels.

Two types of isotropic disordered nonergodic states exist in colloidal suspensions: glasses and gels. The difference between the two is that the nonergodicity, or elasticity, of gel stems from the existence of a percolated network, while that of glass stems from caging effects. Despite this clear difference in the origin of nonergodicity, it is not straightforward to distinguish the two states ...

Structural change and dynamics of colloidal gels under oscillatory shear flow.

The dynamics and rheological behavior of colloidal gels under oscillatory shear flow have been studied by using the Brownian dynamics simulations. The dynamics is studied under the oscillatory shear of small, medium, and large amplitudes. In the small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) regime, the colloidal gel retains a rigid-chain network structure. The colloidal gel oscillates with small str...
